A
virtual private network commonly known as a VPN creates a safe, encrypted
environment where one can safely access an otherwise unsafe public connection.
It works by encrypting the data from the sending end and decrypting it at the
receiving end therefore if someone were to intercept the data during
transmission it would most likely not make sense to them. The security is
further enhanced by encrypting both the originating and receiving Internet
Protocol (IP) addresses.
VPN’s
are particularly useful for organizations that have employees working in remote
locations, thereby requiring to use the network that is outside the
organization's network, which could be potentially unsafe. The need for
employees to work remotely has been further escalated with the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic that has seen companies across the globe adopting to the work
from home model.
This
shift from the traditional office workspace environment, where employees are
required to come to a specific office location and work from there with other
colleagues. Most organizations especially small outfits and startups had
embraced the remote working model as the normal way of doing business. This shift
started with the gig economy when companies and organizations began scouting
for professionals to contract for a specific task that they would be willing to
pay for as the gig or deliverable work. This came about because most of these
businesses were not in a position to afford such a professional on a long term
or permanent basis within their organization.
This
further evolved to hiring staff from across the globe to carry out specific
tasks within the organization such as bookkeeping, human resources management,
and software designs among other skills. Having an infrastructure that supports
the remote working environment has opened possibilities for these companies to
find experienced resources at better rates across the world, a fete that is not
the case locally. This also gave these companies access to a bigger pool of
talented people to choose from drawn from locations across the globe. A
fundamental component with all these businesses and organizations working
remotely is that they have to work and engage a reliable partner to provide a safe
VPN access to their network and be able to check that the company’s information
and data is kept safe.
The
post-COVID -19 work scene is likely to evolve towards the remote or work from
home kind of arrangement for most companies. As a result, a big portion of the company’s
budget will be directed to invest in a secure IT infrastructure that is
versatile to support the business and its various employees to work and access
companies’ information safely. To achieve this, a good VPN partner is pertinent
to the organization's IT landscape.
Companies
such as Google
and
Facebook publicly announced that they don’t expect the employees to go back to
their offices in the short term or at least until the second half of the next year 2021. Yet their operations are going on uninterrupted, providing and
making money even in these tough times. The reason is that such companies have
always invested heavily in technology and in particular securing their data and
access to authorized persons through virtual private networks.
The
COVID pandemic has shaken people across the globe and has raised questions and
made companies and employees alike to reassess their priorities and what
matters to them. Due to this, it is expected that the gig and freelance economy
will grow in leaps and bounds. Most people will want to offer their services
from the places and close to the people that they love. Remote work is bound to
be the new normal even in countries where this trend had not begun before the COVID
pandemic.
